I really rate this artist, illustrator of the early Arthur Ransome books, his watercolours show fantastic use of colour and form. I quote:-
"Through Webb we have a complete reinvention not only of the technique, but also of the artist's eye. Webb used at times, a strongly Cubist approach with his works, and then at other times a beautiful and elegant set of lines which are so decorative, that at times makes you forget that they are drawing your eyes into the main heart of the image. Webb was more than simply an engraver, his works have an outstanding quality, and his works are certainly of their time. His cubist and more abstacted works are the ones I love, because they are so emblematic of that period in British art. If you conisider the cubist works that Susie Cooper, Clarice Cliff and John Skeaping were creating in ceramic design and then look at the images Webb was creating you can see strong similarities, it was a reinvention of art from something distant and abstract, to something that was utilitarian and beautiful. Webb was part of a movement in Britain which was able to interpret artistic motifs of the period (many of which were continental and thus not naturally embraced by the regular British public) and make them something that everyone could understand and appreciate. This to me is part of the gift of a true artist, and part of the reason why art and ceramics of this period have returned to public favour after many years of dwindling attention. "
