Provenance ...from same source as V & A collection attributable Constable.
The iron gall ink, presumably from light exposure, has turned purple.
The ink is black/grey where it is behind the mount.

This sketch reveals Constable's characteristic use of curved pencil marks which can be observed outlining the trees. Similar marks can be seen on the sketch below. (Outlining the tree to the right of the windmill.)
