Mary and Roop Krishna were part of the vanguard of early 20th century artists in India experimenting with western influences interacting with traditional Indian techniques and construction. They were pupils of the watercolour painter Abanindranath Tagore in the early 1920's. Mary Krishna exhibited at the Lahore School of Fine Arts which was a workshop and studio specialising in a less formal method of art education. Her work shows diverse subject matter and the confluence of Eastern and Western styles. One can see Indian dancing figures, ballet dancers, gods, animals (horses in particular) often depicted in an animated or a spinning vortex of movement. Mary Krishna was an Associate member of the Royal College of Art.
