English School
Because many of the works are not signed they have a low price ranging from £20 upwards.
Some of the works are of a fine quality and represent extremely good value and should be an investment.
I have quite a number of very reasonably priced works under my heading:

I have had a canvas for quite a long time; the varnish layer had discoloured so much that it was difficult to identify. I assumed it was 'English School'. I sent the picture to a professional who stripped off the old varnish ... what a difference!
What is revealed is an early work by Joao Hogan (While he was attending The Academy of Fine Art (Lisbon) which already shows the beginnings of the Expressionist style of his later works. You can see it HERE I have a very unusual oil on paper which I have been trying to research. It is after of "Death of the Virgin" ... but not like any other you have seen!
Whilst it may seem like a lunatic assertion to claim a possible attribution for this atypical work to Vincent van Gogh there are similarities with his techniques and brushwork which raise questions. The details of the picture are on my web site : www.vangoghornot.com I'm completely confused by the picture ... and I was hoping that the web site may arouse interest and comments from anyone who could throw any light on this work. There has been no response ... I was expecting indignation ... even abuse at daring to suggest such an atypical work could come from the hand of Van Gogh! (I think that would be my reaction!) A couple of people who have seen the picture have suggested it is a surrealist work. Whilst the subject matter (death) and the representation of the Virgin could be seen as surrealist elements I disagree that it is a surrealist work. More likely, I think, the work of someone who's mind is disturbed. If you have any ideas ... I would be very interested. I have just put on my site a very interesting oil on panel of Cromwell's daughter, Elizabeth pleading for the life of Charles 1st. An interesting symbolic and very well executed work by William Fisk. This is one of a series of works on this subject matter which he painted in and around 1840. On a very thick hardwood panel this work would look superb in a period property. You can see it HERE
Of interest also is an oil on panel of William Shakespeare. It looks to be very old and perhaps contemporary to his lifetime ...if not no later than 17th century when a few portraits cropped up. However there are 'faked up' examples about so I would not make any categorical claims about this work! You can see it HERE I have sold quite a number of pictures to a chap who has just moved into a period property with high ceilings and lots of wall space.
I have a large selection of pictures to chose from (about 300) to suit almost everyone's taste. It worked out very well with one visit supplying his needs. Art is subject to fashion causing a dislocation in the investment value of some Art and Artists. For instance 19th century British Landscape Artists' work is going very cheaply at the moment. Consequently all my prices are low for these works. Who knows, in a few years they could prove to be a terrific investment?
One Artist whose works are very bankable is Picasso. It is noticeable how what could be called his lesser works...prints, lithographs and etchings have a very strong market. I consider these a very secure (blue chip!) investment. One word of warning ... this is a lucrative market for the fakers, dodgers and divers ... be very careful. Buy from a responsible dealer (or collector such as myself!). In particular be very cautious about items offered on Ebay. I consider Art as a terrific investment (especially in these uncertain times). I have always liked to diversify as much as my taste allows. Which, co-incidentally is a very sensible investment tactic. I have a few genuine Picasso lithographs for sale. They are from the 1924 Ballet Russes programme. They are not signed or limited run ... but who knows how many are about. I believe they are very scarce, perhaps no more than 50 in existence? Quite hard to find images of on the internet. One thing is for sure ..they can't make any more of them. In my opinion lithographs are a step up from ordinary prints and represent a good "entry level" way of obtaining a Picasso. Have a look at them HERE There has recently been a studio sale for Waldron West's works. The sale was very successful with one lot (two paintings) making £8,000.
For me his work can be somewhat uneven. Ranging from nicely executed to a 'flat' primitive style. I have some of his better works which seem very cheap compared to his sale prices. You can see them HERE I have just put three oil paintings on my site which have superb period frames. In the right situation they will look a million dollars ... how much am I asking? around £200 each.
They must be a bargain for someone. I particularly like the oil on panel of the three cherubs. Have a look at them HERE Quite good (again!)
Have sold three mezzotints to a dealer in London ... but I'm sorry to lose them! I am getting good feedback which I will post on the site. The main problem is that the site is still difficult to navigate. Items will be found if a specific artist is searched for but I'm sure many people will not find what they may be interested in. For instance a search for "Marine Seascapes" will produce nothing. In other words searches have to be very specific. I have put four chromolithographs on the site from "The Herefordshire Pomona". These are superb prints taken from The Herefordshire Pomona which had a limited print run of just 600 copies. Printed around 1880 copies make around £10,000. I can only find some other examples from the original book in the U.S.A. They are asking double my price! Would make a very good Xmas present. Quite good! Have sold an etching to the USA, a watercolour to Wales and a large seascape is going to Dorset.
I realise that my site is quite difficult to navigate. All the artist's name at the top are a difficult presentation. So I'm going to have a column listing the artists. I hope it's better. The Google Adwords trial period has ended. I think it resulted in the sale of the etching. For me the price per click has to come down to make it worthwhile. |
